Species surveys and techniques

We are also supporting other proposals to develop population assessment techniques for the British newts and widespread anurans. This would run in parallel to NARRS for a period of two years, and feed its recommendations into NARRS, enabling the improvement of assessment methods over time.

In addition, The HCT has initiated an annual national survey called ‘Make the Adder Count’ to investigate the effectiveness of head-counts at reflecting trends in adder populations. Alongside this, we are also launching a web-based project called ‘Adders Then and Now’ (www.adder.org.uk) for members of the public to record their experiences and recollections of adders, e.g. childhood memories and places where adders used to be but aren’t seen today.
